Dear Community,

Welcome back from your summer vacation. Many of you traveled out to, among other things, experience a change of environment. Many others also decided to take a staycation in your favourite city, Ottawa. Either choice, I trust, worked well for you and your family. I also would like to welcome all the students (from elementary schools to the tertiary institutions) among us back to school. I wish you all the best in the new academic year. In line with the Association’s established practice, we bring you the September 2011 edition of our Community Bulletin.

TWO MEMBERS JOIN THE EXECUTIVE

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to welcome the following persons on the board of the Association as Directors-at-Large:

Ms. Ethel Harlley; and
Mr. Bismark Otoo

Appointed in fulfillment of Article 16, Clause 16.2 of the Constitution, Ms. Harlley and Mr. Otoo are, certainly, a great addition to the wonderful pool of talent on the Executive. I would like the entire Association to join me in congratulating them on this appointment and to wish them the best in their work.

Congrats Ethel and Bismark and welcome aboard!!

DOCUMENTARY MOVIE ON GHANA

Following is information on the documentary on Ghana:
Title: ‘An African Election’
Date & Time: Thursday, September 8, 2011 – 7:00pm
Venue: ByTowne Cinema, 325 Rideau Street

All tickets: $10.00

The screening of “An African Election”, a fundraiser for the One World Film Festival, is a remarkable documentary that grants viewers unprecedented access to the anatomy of Ghana’s 2008 presidential elections. Capturing the intrigue of electioneering, the intensity of the vote-counting process, and the mood of the countrymen whose fate lies precariously in the balance, director Jarreth Merz’s coverage unfolds with all the tension of a political thriller, revealing the emotions, passions, and ethical decisions that both threaten—and maintain—the integrity of the democratic process. “An African Election” illuminates a beacon of hope for Africa and for the value and vitality of democracy today.

Later, Amanda Coffie (Ph.D. candidate, Political Science, Carleton University) will facilitate discussion of the film at a nearby location, the African Palace, 376 Rideau Street.

For additional information about the One World Film Festival, please visit: www.oneworldarts.ca

THANKS FOR SUPPORTING GHANAFEST 2011

On behalf of the Executive of the Ghanaian Association of Ottawa, I would like to thank the community for the wonderful support you offered GHANAFEST 2011. That is showing true community spirit and we thank you for that.

We also would like to express especial gratitude to His Excellency, Dr. Richard Turkson and staff of the High Commission for coming out to give us the strongest of support. You were there early, patronized the food and wares, and stayed around to watch the Black Stars of Ottawa play the Nigerians. We truly appreciate your support.
